Unsurprisingly, the Austrian Oak’s diet resembled every other golden era bodybuilder’s diet. It consisted of a lot of protein in the form of eggs, fish, meat, nuts, and more. However, athletes in those days did not load up on carbs and went low. Arnold’s go-to diet, combined with his intensive workout routine, gave him the best physique of them all.

But how did Arnold Schwarzenegger go about calculating his calories before and during contests? Well, he did not! The star refrained from keeping a count of his macros or calories. He would instead just continue to eat a lot of protein and cut down on carbs. But he would still eat the food he loved.

“Arnold also never tracked his macros or calories,” according to the video. However, Schwarzenegger had one rule he would stick to in case he needed to cut down. He wouldn’t entirely change his diet. Instead, the legend would just eat less of what he would normally consume. This way, he would get to eat what he liked and still keep a check on his diet.

Putting a vegan twist for better health

For being a bodybuilder with an excellent physique, it was shocking when Schwarzenegger admitted to having a heart defect since birth. Over the years, the former bodybuilder became more conscious about his health and his diet.

Later on in his life, Arnie switched to a mostly plant-based diet. While he would still include some meat here and there, he realized that a mostly vegan diet cut down his risk of high cholesterol. Incorporating this huge lifestyle change helped the star lead a healthier life. Currently, Schwarzenegger has set an example of healthy living by regularly working out and watching his diet, while inspiring others to do the same.
