Failures are often tough to handle, especially after a long period of hard work. In fields like bodybuilding, where it takes months of intensive training to make it to the top, failure often hits harder. 7x Mr. Olympia Phil Heath sat down to reflect upon this when he recalled his failures. However, the legend was fortunate enough to have a celebrity friend to cheer him up.

Heath was a former basketball player, and his history with the sport got him some long-lasting friendships. One of his closest confederates was the basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal. In a recent interview with Lewis Howes, Heath talked about how Shaq once helped him out of the lowest moments in his life.

When Shaq motivated Phil Heath with some encouraging words

For Phil Heath, bodybuilding led him through a path of health nightmares. What he originally thought was a hernia turned out to be life-threatening intestinal strangulation. After a long, arduous healing process, Heath’s mental health took a huge hit. He couldn’t access the gym due to his ailments and couldn’t perform well in upcoming bodybuilding events. All of this created one of the lowest points in his life.

This was when some of his closest friends came to his rescue. Heath recalled how his celebrity friends took some time to empathize with and advised him during his healing process. Among them was the NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. In a heartwarming moment, Shaq went out of his way to offer words of encouragement for the bodybuilding champion.

“I was very thankful for the words that he said. You know, he’s basically saying like sucks, happens, unfortunately”, recalled Heath. The bodybuilding legend was immensely grateful for the few who spoke to him, even though many didn’t bother consoling him.

Shaq and Heath’s friendship only grew stronger

Phil Heath won the title of Mr. Olympia 7 times in a row and hoped for his 8th. However, in a cruel twist of events, not only did he undergo a dangerous ailment, but he also lost the title in 2018. While frustration was evident, Heath was also visibly sad and upset about his loss. That’s where Shaq swooped in to have a word.

Shaquille O’Neal was quick to contact the bodybuilding legend and offer his consolation and encouragement. Heath was grateful for his presence and support during tough times. Athletes often go through common problems, no matter which sport they participate in. And in times like this, sportsmanship and camaraderie are helpful to get through hurdles.
