With popularity comes the bane of losing personal space and privacy. And NBA superstar Michael Jordan knew all too well about that. The star peaked in the 90s, with his incredible skills and popularity surrounding his collaboration with Nike. While he was grateful for all the opportunities, he once admitted the downsides of stardom.

In 1992, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s now ex-wife and journalist Maria Shriver sat down for a candid chat with the star. While talking about his popularity and his career, Shriver asked him his thoughts on the effects of his popularity.

Jordan opened up to Shriver on his bleak private life

Being one of the greatest players of all time, Michael Jordan garnered respect wherever he went. In the 80s, with his iconic collaboration with Nike, he introduced the world to his new brand – Air Jordans. Due to an increasingly popular name that only got bigger with more and more matches, Jordan’s image as a basketball ‘god’ was prevalent. Nevertheless, Shriver wanted his opinion on this phenomenon.

Up until then, Michael Jordan was on the list of the greatest. Fans admired him for his play, his name, and his brand. But did all of this have any adverse effects on the legend’s life? Shriver asked, “what is the price of being so admired of being such a role model of being considered a god-like figure?”

He admitted that one of the main downsides of being popular was the non-existence of private life. “It takes away from your private life some of your natural things that you may want to do,” he responded. Jordan recalled how he couldn’t even watch movies with his wife since people would interrupt him midway for autographs. Privacy became a far-fetched dream and the legend would always be conscious of his words and actions.

The veteran made a reference to Jordan’s motivational message, where the basketball legend admitted to missing 9000 shots. While interacting with the crowd, Schwarzenegger explained how, despite missing so many shots, no one would consider Jordan a failure. That’s because he rose from his failures to become what he is now. And although he faced some hurdles even after his popularity, he’s still the greatest basketball legend of all time.
