While competing with streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime isn’t easy, Apple TV + has grown in leaps and bounds in the last few years. One major contributor to that was a TV series whose first season came out in 2020. Whilst still in lockdown, the show, with its bright, likable characters, and optimistic take on life and opportunities, gave every viewer a beautiful sense of comfort, relief, and an overall good feeling. Such is the popularity of the show that American journalist Maria Shriver, ex-wife of bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger too, got hooked on it.
In a recent Instagram post, Shriver shared a long post, confessing her love for the comedy-drama Ted Lasso. The show, about a former football coach from Kansas who takes up a soccer coaching gig in England, for the club AFC Richmond, had everyone by its grips from its Pilot episode. Here are the reasons author and journalist Maria Shriver is in love with it.

Maria Shriver wrote on her Instagram, “Ted Lasso is one of my favorite shows, and there is a reason why… I love it because it helps show the realities of mental health. It helps take away the stigma of asking for help, of leaning on others, of being vulnerable”. The show, with soccer as its front, touches on almost every sensitive issue that is prevalent in modern times.

It also deconstructs several issues discussed in society and puts a good spin on them. Such as when Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), the new owner of the club after her divorce from her ex-husband, starts dating someone younger, it is shown as an empowering aspect. Or, when Ted Lasso opens up about his teenage trauma after his dad passed away, it was met with an overwhelmingly good reception.
Several such moments are scattered all across the show. Shriver ends her Instagram caption with, “That the strongest among us maybe aren’t so strong, and we all need a shoulder to lean on.

Maria Shriver’s deep love for the show is not an anomaly among celebrities. The show, wrought with inside jokes and multiple name-dropping of celebrities, has also got shout-outs from those respective celebrities. Ryan Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, and Lin-Manuel Miranda are just to name a few.
Has anyone told @Lin_Manuel and @ChrisisSingin about the Hamilton joke at the Ted Lasso season 2 premiere?
