It was a fine evening in Kansas City, Missouri on April 13, 2023. A young Ralph Yarl was on his way to pick up his siblings, when he entered the wrong property and rang the bell. What followed him next, is something that rocked the entire nation. This includes the former first lady of California Maria Shriver. Bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s ex-wife Maria Shriver has voiced her concerns regarding gun violence in the wake of Ralph Yarl’s shooting. She demands more accountability on this matter.

Maria Shriver took to her Instagram and shared a series of cartoons of Ralph Yarl and the sequence of events that happened with him on that evening. It is both heartbreaking and angering to think of what Yarl faced, and the injustice that prevails. Shriver has expressed just that over her Instagram.

Maria Shriver wrote on her Instagram, “Ralph Yarl, a young Black teen who was shot in the head after ringing the doorbell at the wrong house. The man who shot Ralph has not been charged”. She continues to say, “We do not need to resort to violence and extremes, yet over and over these tragedies occur. Let us continue to demand more accountability, more justice, and work to find a common ground together!” Shriver, who once shared her distress after reading about a little girl’s confession during the Syria earthquake, has once again brought another serious topic to the forefront.

To explain the story further, Ralph Yarl, on his way to find his siblings, was supposed to go to 115th Terrace. He accidentally went to 115th Street and rang the doorbell. The homeowner not wanting Yarl on his property, shot him in the head. Somehow, Yarl is still alive but is suffering from severe injuries. He was shot twice and stuck in the head and arm.

Amidst the national outrage over this shooting, Shriver also wrote, “We do not need to live this way. We do not need to keep hearing story after story of gun violence when a conversation could have taken place”, which is rather telling of certain incidents that have happened in the past in the US. It’s not been a year since the Robb Elementary School Shooting, while so many are still reeling from the effects of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. And who could forget the racial attack on George Floyd?

Time and time again, such incidents of violence, hate, and racial attacks have rocked the states over the years. And sadly, it continues to happen. When Shriver wrote, “The man who shot Ralph has not been charged”, the pain of falling prey to injustice was evident in her words. She also wrote that the identity of the shooter wasn’t confirmed then. But recently, as per BBC, it was a man by the name of Andrew Lester.

Andrew Lester is an 84-year-old white male who shot 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, who is black. Besides, the crime involved, there is also a racial component to the shooting, thus making it a hate crime. After his initial detention, when the Police let him go, it sparked major protests in the city. On the other hand, there is some good news on the horizon. Ralph Yarl was released from the hospital and is on his way to recovery. But this incident could very well be another wake-up call for everyone to call for a better, socially acceptable justice system.
