A spirit animal is representative of a guide or totem, protecting its human companion on a journey. The Grown Ups 2 actor Patrick Schwarzenegger believes his to be this wild, free beast of the ocean. However, not unlike most people, Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s eldest son fears the magnificent beasts as well.
Sharks are unforgiving sea dwellers that seldom allow easy meat to escape their jaws. Strangely, Patrick Schwarzenegger believes it’s his spirit animal. But at the same time, he wouldn’t easily go near an ocean due to his “crippling” fear of the animal.

In a recent episode of the podcast ‘The Squeeze’ hosted by Taylor Lautner and his wife Taylor Dome, Patrick Schwarzenegger and his mother Maria Shriver were the guests. The eldest son and the ex-wife of bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger graced the occasion to talk about parenting, holistic health, and Shriver’s Alzheimer’s awareness. However, a fun segment in the show veered towards the revelation of their spirit animals.
“Mine’s a shark. A Great White shark”, said Patrick Schwarzenegger, right after his mother revealed her spirit animal to be a horse. Shriver said, “He’s terrified of sharks“, to which Patrick Schwarzenegger replied, “I’m terrified but it’s my spirit animal… crippling of, I can’t even go in the ocean”.
The topic arose out of a segment in the show called ‘Cit-Rus got real’. In it, guests pick questions from a chit and answer them. Shriver said that a horse is a party animal, which is also her spirit animal. This is exactly when her son meddles in.
The Jaws effect: The increased fear of sharks among humans
Patrick Schwarzenegger, who, among other things, also feared his dad’s performance as Mr. Freeze in Joel Schumacher’s 1997 rendition of the caped crusader, Batman and Robin, said that the fear of sharks is what keeps him out of oceans. He often prefers lakes, despite knowing that there may be other dangers lurking within them.

While his fear of sharks wasn’t completely unfounded, it is also worth noting that Great White sharks rarely attack humans, as per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. If one recalls the imagery of the 1975 movie Jaws, it had a great effect on exaggerating the intimidation of sharks. By the same token, the image of a shark attacking a human will forever be haunting for many, including Patrick Schwarzenegger.
