Bodybuilders, not unlike many other physically strenuous professionals, are prone to accidents and injuries. However, some accidents are unforeseen and unavoidable. But not according to 3-time Mr. Olympia winner Frank Zane. Right before the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest, Frank Zane suffered a terrible accident. But despite that, he believes that “there’s no such thing as an accident”, and what’s on one’s mind is responsible for any outcome. However, recently, another bodybuilding icon, the winner of 1983 Mr. Olympia, strongly disagreed with Zane’s belief.

Samir Bannout won the 1983 edition of Mr. Olympia and knows Frank Zane very well from their heydays. Although he has immense respect for Zane, Bannout disagrees with him on his belief about accidents, since he just suffered from one recently.

In a recent YouTube video by Old School Labs, episode 40 of The Muscle Maturity Podcast, Samir Bannout, John Hansen, and host Nick Trigili got together to discuss current topics and stories from the bodybuilding community. At one point, John Hansen said, “Did you guys hear Frank Zane say there’s no such thing as an accident?… Like whatever is on your mind creates what happened”.

When Hansen puts this up for discussion, Samir Bannout chimes in, “I disagree. I hate to disagree with Frank Zane… because I know he is very smart. I know he’s sharp. But accidents do happen, whether you like it or not. If he was like uncomfortable about training… that doesn’t pull the chair on his urethra”.

For the unversed, right before the 1980 Mr. Olympia, Frank Zane was getting a sun tan one day in his house in Palm Springs. He was laying by the pool on a chair when it collapsed and he fell. His hip hit the corner of the pool and he hurt his urethra.

How Frank Zane developed this belief

Frank Zane lost a lot of blood and was hospitalized thereafter. But he still reserves the blame for himself. Zane believed that since he wasn’t very keen or interested in doing the 1980 Olympia in the first place, the accident was bound to happen due to his negligence. Samir Bannout, who has high respect for Frank Zane and considers him a “very smart… sharp” man, takes a cue from his recent car accident experience to disagree with him.
