Chris Bumstead entered the competitive bodybuilding circuit in 2017, ending up runners up at the Mr. Olympia Classic Physique division. Since then, very few have been able to associate their names with their discipline the same way Cbum has with Classic Physique. He first won the competition in 2019 and has since successfully defended it every year till now. However, breaking many hearts, the 28-year-old Canadian IFBB Pro has recently hinted at calling it quits sometime in the next few years. But he isn’t leaving without finishing on top.

Chris Bumstead recently appeared on The Truth podcast with Hany Rambod, his current coach. Their discussion ranged from when Cbum started working out with Rambod, how he tore his bicep, and also his retirement plans. Here’s what he had to say.

Chris Bumstead said to Rambod on The Truth podcast, “I know I have at least one more in me. After this year, same thing. If I’m like, ‘fu** I’m done,’ and I’m getting out of here, then I’m done. I hope I trust myself enough to know that it’s time to check out because my one goal I have with retirement is retiring on top. That’s really all I care about. I don’t really care about how many I get”.

The discussion stemmed from the fact that a lot of people were thinking Cbum might’ve retired last year. Bumstead himself agreed that he had lost a lot of weight and joked about how he didn’t look like someone who was bodybuilding. So, when Rambod finally asked him about his mentality towards how long he wants to keep pursuing bodybuilding, Cbum was as genuine as he could be.

He said, “My honest answer is one more because last year I thought this might be my last one… if my health isn’t there, if I’m feeling too stressful, why am I doing this? I’m not going to do something I used to love and now it stresses me out…” Bumstead also tore his bicep putting a pause on his bodybuilding last year.

Chris Bumstead won the Olympia with his torn bicep

Bumstead was talking about how much he was enjoying bodybuilding last year. It was as if he had a newfound love and appreciation for the art of bodybuilding. This was until he tore his bicep. He felt a pain in his upper arms the night before Mr. Olympia pre-judging. Later, the area started swelling before it was torn. Nevertheless, the 230-lb hunk still won the Mr. Olympia Classic Physique title and sent the bodybuilding world into a frenzy with his confession.

Whether Bumstead retires next year or the year after that, is something only time will tell. But what’s commendable is that he only seemed to be doing it as long as he is enjoying it to the fullest. He has maintained this approach for the last many years he won as well.
