“I Was Letting People Down”: Arnold Schwarzenegger Once Opened Up on Affecting His Family With His Ignorant Decisions

The former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, split with his ex-wife, Maria Shriver, in 2011. The couple divorced just after Arnold stepped down from the governor’s post. However, the divorce took 10 years to conclude, and they eventually got divorced in 2021. The couple decided to split after Maria confirmed the fact that Arnold fathered a child with their housekeeper Mildred Baena.

Arnold Schwarzenegger opened up about the matter in his memoir. The memoir is called “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.” Moreover, he came clean about his feelings and thoughts on this subject in this book.

Arnold Schwarzenegger realized he let his family down

Joseph Baena, Arnold’s son with Mildred Baena, was born in 1997. Arnold confessed in his memoir that he cheated on his wife in 1996 when she went on a trip with their children. However, Arnold couldn’t make it, as he was busy with his Hollywood projects. Arnold confessed, “I blocked out the fact that as a husband and father, as a man with a family and wife, I was letting people down.”

Arnold confessed the truth for the first time in front of Maria in 2011 when they went to see a therapist. Although, Arnold thought of that visit to help the couple transition from a public to a personal level. But Maria had known things for a long while, and she wanted him to confirm it.

Schwarzenegger wrote, “The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, ‘Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child — whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred.'”

Arnold regrets not opening up early

Arnold, according to him, committed a mistake in his married life. However, he accepts the mistake but thinks that he made it too late to confess. But in the end, the truth is tough to mask forever, and Joseph grew up to be looking like him. He wrote in his memoir, “The resemblance was so strong that ‘I realized there was little doubt that he was my son.'”

Similarly, Arnold felt he should have admitted to Maria way before then he actually did. Arnold stated, “But instead of doing the right thing, I’d just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn’t deal with it every day”.

Despite knowing it a long way back, Maria decided to reveal it after he steps down from the governor’s post. This demonstrated Maria’s dedication to the marriage. Arnold, too, once accepted that Maria had been a noble wife and a mother.
