Bodybuilder-turned-actor Lou Ferrigno, an eminent figure in the two industries, is known for his massive stature. Ferrigno competed alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 70s. Back in the day, the 6’5″ giant built a fearful image due to his famous role in the series The Incredible Hulk. However, it just took mere seconds for a 5’2″ self-defense teacher to make this beast taste the dust.

Recently, an old video is making rounds on the internet where Lou Ferrigno was brought to the ground by the famous Canadian combat instructor, Bill Underwood. But why did Underwood do so?

Back in the 1970s, Bill Underwood joined Lou Ferrigno for an interview with Johnny Carson. During the interview, Underwood demonstrated various self-defense techniques and tried them on his co-interviewee and host. At the beginning of the viral clip from the interview, the instructor used a small stick to block an attack by host Carson. In another swift motion, he locked Carson’s hand and brought him down on his knees. As the host screamed from the pain, Underwood hugged him to calm him down.

Next, he asked Ferrigno to come forward for the next technique. As Ferrigno seemed nervous, the ‘Little Giant Killer’ asked him to relax and not resist the attack. He went on to demonstrate how to block another attack aimed at the head. It didn’t take long for Ferrigno to fall flat on the ground. Looking at the scene that unfolded before his eyes, Carson commented, “If you really didn’t know…if you really resisted, that could break your wrist.”

Just like Ferrigno and Carson, Underwood had trained many Canadian soldiers in the past. During WWII, Underwood was Canada’s top Underwood Combat Instructor. He was also the creator of the mixed martial arts technique ‘Defendo’. Underwood had appeared on “The Johnny Carson Show” four times. At the time of his appearance with Ferrigno, Bill Underwood was 85 years old. Though Ferrigno learned a technique or two from Underwood that day, the Hulk himself has trained another esteemed personality.

Before the legendary Pop star passed away in 2009, Lou Ferrigno was Michael Jackson’s personal trainer. For a long time, Jackson had suffered from chronic back pain which heightened during his tours. Jackson’s long-time friend, Ferrigno, was able to help him out with it.

Ferrigno suggested various workouts that relaxed Jackson’s tensed muscles. The Hulk once revealed the “workout wasn’t any heavy resistance.” It included a light walk on the treadmill and lots of stretching. Ferrigno trained Michael Jackson for over 25 years until his untimely death.
