Besides bodybuilding, former IFBB pro, Frank Zane depended on an academically staunch background. He taught Mathematics and Chemistry in school as a full-time teacher and had been involved in the profession for over 13 years. Aptly nicknamed ‘The Chemist’, Zane even helped the bodybuilding icon and personal friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger with his studies in college amid competing days. However, when speaking of Schwarzenegger’s bodybuilding regimen, Zane claimed it didn’t work out well for him.

Talking to Escape Fitness on YouTube, the three-time Mr. Olympia elucidated that he devised his own fitness routine that worked best for him. Although he tried Schwarzenegger’s six-day weekly training method, he ended up stressing himself out. Here’s what he said.

In the recent episode that surfaced on Saturday, the 80-year-old icon was asked what kind of traditional workout he followed during his off-season bodybuilding days. Responding to that, he shared that he used two forms — a two-way and three-way split. Out of the two, he essentially confided in the latter form for most of his training days. “3 days on one day off, followed that a lot, and that really gave me the results I wanted,” the IFBB Hall of Famer told.

Further, the athlete disclosed that he attempted to stretch his workout throughout the week like that of Schwarzenegger. However, he felt fatigued and burnt out eventually. “I tried training five-six days a week like the Arnold method, I just got overtrained doing that and so now I fell into this pattern to be one on off and it worked really well,” the 5’9” star declared.

But for now, he seeks a lighter physique and doesn’t “do a lot.” As an alternative to his prior intense regimen, the bodybuilder asserted that he goes on long walks with his dog every morning. “For now, I just train maybe twice maybe three times a week, and I do two either full body routines or a split routine… I stay light, I walk a lot,” he shared. Speaking to the sources in 2019, Zane unveiled his relationship with Schwarzenegger, talking about Pumping Iron and their friendship. When the host picked on his most peculiar encounter with the seven-time Mr. Olympia, he revealed that the latter’s knowledge wasn’t as sound in algebra as in bodybuilding. “Arnold was going to Santa Monica City College and I helped him with his math,” the pro recounted.

Moreover, Zane added, “He was taking college algebra. He didn’t had a clue.” Hence, as his friend, he put his numerical powers to good use and taught him algebra. Interestingly, the athlete told his champion friend, “I don’t like to study either, but this is how you do it.”
