Migrating from Austria to America in 1968, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s life hasn’t been a bed of roses. In his autobiography ‘Total Recall’ Schwarzenegger related how he walked a tightrope, trying to balance his career and personal life. Recounting the turbulent times during his wedding, Schwarzenegger narrated how he surprised guests with his unexpected wedding look. 

The bodybuilding champion married Maria Shriver in April 1986. This year was crucial for Schwarzenegger’s career as in 1986, the Austrian Oak was shooting for the science fiction movie ‘The Predator.’ Along with revealing untold insights about this shooting, Schwarzenegger shared Maria Shriver’s expectations about the wedding. The Austrian Oak narrated how while the marriage date of 26th April 1986 had been decided, the Predator movie’s production hadn’t stopped. “I found myself deep in the Mexican jungle near the ruined Mayan City of Palenque less than forty-eight hours before I was due at the altar, “ Schwarzenegger recalled. 

Continuing, he related that when he finally arrived for the wedding, he was still thinking about the movie. Further, he stated, “Meanwhile, some of our guests were wondering why the groom had showed up with a military crew cut.” Since Schwarzenegger was the leader of a paramilitary rescue team in the movie, he had to get a military crew cut for the role. Later, Schwarzenegger implied how he didn’t let the guests’ reactions to his crew cut affect him. “I made the best of it”, the Austrian Oak stated, adding, “Even if the situation wasn’t ideal, doing it this way was adventurous and fun.”

With this, the Austrian Oak also spoke about how Maria Shriver wasn’t happy that he had missed the final wedding preparations during his shooting. Talking about how there were problems with the movie, Schwarzenegger described a jungle sequence he had to shoot. While this action sequence required Schwarzenegger to say “Get Down”, and hide, an actor named Jesse chanted, “I do! I do!” apparently hinting at Schwarzenegger’s upcoming marriage. This marriage finally took place on 26th April 1965 and the couple were married for 25 years before divorcing. Opening up on his divorce, the Austrian Oak made a strong statement in his autobiography ‘Total Recall.’

Schwarzenegger admitted that he had given Maria Shriver and his kids’ tremendous pain. Regretting how his affair with Mildred Baena broke his family, Schwarzenegger described it as “one of those stupid things”, he thought he’d never do. Schwarzenegger had hidden this affair from his family for more than 10 years. Later, this affair came to light in 2011. 

The Austrian Oak confessed it was a terrible thing he did. Further, he added that he hoped Shriver would forgive him and they could be together as a family. Clearly, the Austrian Oak deeply wishes that things could be different.
