Arnold Schwarzenegger began The Pump Daily as a no-nonsense newsletter to help busy working adults regain their fitness. In the newsletter, Schwarzenegger provides workout challenges that even the busiest person can take on. He also gives diet advice while simultaneously busting myths surrounding diet and exercise. However, the bodybuilding legend has also talked about the mindset people should develop to achieve their goals. In the latest edition of The Pump Daily, the former Mr. Olympia highlighted curiosity.

“Be curious about people. You never know what you’ll learn,” was what Schwarzenegger wanted his readers to take away. However, the former Mr. Universe also recounted a cherished memory to drive his point home. Arnie explained what he learned about curiosity helped him face the intimidating Barbara Walters.

The seven-time Mr. Olympia started by recounting his first encounter with Henry Kissinger. Kissinger was a Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, and Noble Peace Prize winner. Schwarzenegger described him as “someone I saw on TV all the time. I read whatever he wrote, and I was blown away by his intelligence.”

Schwarzenegger counted himself lucky he had run into Kissinger. The Former Mr. Olympia asked the Noble Prize winner, “How are you so calm and collected in all of your interviews?” The Terminator actor wrote he would never forget the advice Kissinger gave him that day. Arnold, the trick is, I start out by asking the interviewer questions,” said the former Secretary of State.

“It throws them off wanting to interrogate me and it also puts my mind at ease,” added the Nobel laureate. According to Kissinger, the curiosity he showed toward the interviewer turned a nervous Q&A session into a “regular conversation.” Schwarzenegger told his The Pump Daily readers he would use Kissinger’s technique to dodge what he felt would be an interrogation by trailblazing journalist Barbara Walters.

Finding common ground with Barbara Walters

Barbara Walters was a pioneer in the field of journalism. Never afraid to ask tough questions, Walter’s confidence during an interview disarmed interviewees prompting them to speak without restraint. Whether she was interviewing Ronald Reagan or Taylor Swift, the late journalist excelled at her work. Hence it was natural for Arnold Schwarzenegger to be nervous during his first interview with Walters.

However, as Kissinger had told him, Schwarzenegger asked the first question. “While we were getting settled, I said, ‘Who is one of your favorite interviews?'” asked Schwarzenegger. Surprisingly Walters answered, “Henry Kissinger was a fantastic interview.” By the time their interview began, Schwarzenegger and Walters were smiling.
