Mark Ruffalo has been playing the Hulk for quite some time now. It’s unbelievably easy for him in the era of CGI. But was the story always the same? As Lou Ferrigno depicts, he had to wear a pair of shorts and dip himself in the green for The Incredible Hulk. The makeup, took nearly 4 hours! Moreover, Ferrigno had to wear hard white shell lenses for almost all day long that even numbed his eyeball. Despite the troubles he had faced since his childhood, the actor risked his health to play the Hulk.
Apparently, his passion was such, that the bodybuilder-turned-actor endured all the difficulties. Curious to know more about this? Let’s dig.

Having difficulties in hearing from a young age, the actor had to wear hearing aids and even had to attend speech therapy. These inspired him to be more physically active and he ended up becoming a bodybuilder. Evidently, his passion paid well.
In 1977, when Ferrigno was preparing for Mr. Olympia, he auditioned for The Incredible Hulk and eventually got the chance. But acting with so much makeup on, was difficult and it even concerned him about having eye infections. In an interview with The Guardian, he shared, “The contact lenses I had to wear had a hard white shell that numbed the eyeball. I’d take them out immediately after a scene so my eyes didn’t get infected.”
In addition, he also talked about how the makeup was tiring for him. “Makeup took about three and a half hours. They applied four coats of paint and I’d stand there in green underwear, arms out in crucifixion pose. If the weather was hot, I had to sit in a bathrobe in my motorhome with the air conditioning on. It was very uncomfortable – but when I glanced in the mirror, I thought I looked beautiful”.
Although we see him as the actor who became popular after the iconic movie, his journey was not so easy. Evidently, his passion and ambition for achieving more helped him on his road to success.
