Phantom pain neuropathy is a chronic pain that patients with amputations go through. Flex Wheeler, who had his right leg amputated in 2019, deals with it at a severe level. Around three months ago, a drug called Amitriptyline was given to him for comfort. However, it brought along its terrible side effects with it. Now, angered, Wheeler is calling out doctors to conduct better research before prescribing as well as asking everyone to be more diligent with prescribed medications. Here’s his take on it.

In a recent video on Instagram, Flex Wheeler, almost teary-eyed, gave a detailed update about his health condition. While the past two months have been horrific for him, he still felt obliged to inform and alert everyone about the same on Instagram.

“This is my hands. I’m not shaking on purpose,” Wheeler said as he put his trembling hand forward on camera. He started feeling tremors so extreme, that he thought he might have Alzheimer’s. When he later researched and found out that it was a side-effect of the drug Amitriptyline, Wheeler went livid.

Wheeler said, “I’m so angry, I’m so angry that today’s society, there’s an old saying, ‘take two Aspirin and call me in the morning,’ doctors are basically saying try this drug and tell me how it works for you. And you guys need to be diligent. Ask your doctors what are all the side effects that are possible. The majority of drugs that I’m on, mine are like 10-fold. I get the extraordinary, extreme versions of it”.

Wheeler had all the side effects one could possibly have. A bodybuilding legend with multiple Arnold Classic victories to his name was crying for better healthcare. From reports about coffee consumption that may lead to cardiovascular diseases to his own experience with dysfunctional opiates, Flex Wheeler is always on his toes to share and inform his viewers.

Wheeler further mentions that he has no hard feelings for the doctor. He believes they probably have the best option for their patients in mind, but there needs to be extra care put into every patient’s medication. Since the after-effects could be devastating, what is worrisome is not following up on the after-effects could lead to fatal consequences.

Wheeler’s tryst with pain is still not over, as his body has continuously battled to accept pain-relief medications with suffering from extreme versions of the after-effects. From opiates to antidepressants and finally, to this, living an ordinary life is still a far-fetched dream. As far as medications are concerned, Wheeler urges his fans to be conscious about it, and quite rightly so.
