Dorian Yates is someone who has witnessed the transformation that has happened on the Olympia stage. In an interview, he finally spoke about the fan following of bodybuilding compared to other sports.

The 6-time Mr. Olympia speculated about the recognition of bodybuilding. In an interview with Valuetainment, Yates shared, “I don’t think bodybuilding is like I never I was realistic I never thought bodybuilding is gonna be mainstream like football or baseball or soccer or something like that, it’s too specialized.” Let’s dig deeper to know all he had to say about it.
Is Dorian Yates being rational?
Unlike other conventional sports, according to him, bodybuilding always had to depend upon the viewers. The authorities had to consistently produce content for which people would pay and watch. However, performance-enhancing drugs or steroids were always a big issue in the bodybuilding fraternity. Yates was well aware of this issue and made his statement accordingly.

He knew the drawbacks and being disappointed he said, “…you got the controversy about drugs not that bodybuilding is the only sport that is involved with that a lot lot of sports…”. Unlike cycling and other sport that requires physical strength, most bodybuilders have a reputation to stay on drugs. Yates elaborated further, that when people see a bodybuilder they are sure that those widened veins and muscles are the result of drugs. And they compare it to other athletes who have comparatively thin bodies and focus on gaining strength and power rather than size. Hence, the popularity of other sports.
