Flex Wheeler has had an incredible journey. He overcame hardships and poverty to become a fighter and bodybuilder. However, bodybuilding became his dominant sport. From the moment Flex began competing, he claimed one title after another. Notably, Flex won the Arnold Classic four times, and Schwarzenegger called him one of the greatest bodybuilders ever.

In 2018, Wheeler talked about his journey in a podcast and also revealed why he saw himself in the same light as the Olympic legend Usain Bolt.

The Sultan of Symmetry said he’s like Usain Bolt

In 2018, Flex Wheeler appeared on the Mind Pump podcast; Mind Pump TV uploaded the video of the same on their YouTube Channel. During the conversation, Flex revealed his story to the hosts. One host asked Flex how he got into bodybuilding. “How did you get into bodybuilding? And then what was that like? Because you came out the gates and just won everything that you touched,” said the host. 

Flex responded by saying, “Yeah, I don’t, I don’t know how it happened. I mean that’s nothing am I doing, that’s the man upstairs.” Flex revealed that at the time he was training with other competitors like Chris Cormier and Charles Glass. But he didn’t recall working harder than the others. “It was just a gift that the man upstairs gave me… I was blessed to do it,” said Wheeler.

“My keyword is, I was ‘blessed’ you know that’s just like Usain Bolt,” said Flex. Flex Wheeler had arguably the best genetics of all time. Even six-time, Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates said that Flex was more “naturally talented.”

However, both Ronnie Coleman and Yates said that they outworked Flex. The “Sultan of Symmetry” also had a rare kidney disease that affected his career. Flex’s kidney failed in 1999 and he retired in 2003. Since then, Flex has gone under the knife several times. In fact, in 2019, the icon even went through amputation to save his life.

Flex Wheeler made a comeback at 51

In 2017, Flex Wheeler made a remarkable comeback. The bodybuilding icon competed in the classic physique category. However, unlike other competitors, Flex was 51 at that time. Flex came on stage with exceptional conditioning and tightness for his age, but was also very lean; Wheeler placed 15th. In 2017, current champion Chirs Bumstead placed second.

Flex Wheeler is one of the most gifted bodybuilders to step on stage and had better genetics than the best of his era. Wheeler may have never won the Mr. Olympia title, but fans, as well as past and current bodybuilders, remember him as a legend of the sport.
