Can Marlene Flowers' journey redefine what it means to be fit at 67? Share your thoughts!

Bodybuilding, like many sports, tends to favor younger athletes who can leverage their peak physical strength and recovery. Many experts claim that the late 20s are an optimal time to start muscle building, as aging often brings a decline in strength and endurance, making muscle growth more challenging. However, some older individuals still embrace bodybuilding, proving that strength can be developed at any age. One such example of this is Marlene Flowers.

Marlene was quite fit when she was younger. However, her body image and self-confidence took a dive after two bad marriages, resulting in her becoming unfit. Due to the stress from her marriages, she developed an eating disorder, which led to her colon surgery. When she learned about this, Marlene decided that she had to change. She had to become fitter and live a longer life.

Her journey towards fitness started in 2015 with a keto diet and home workouts where her son was her trainer. She was 58 during that time. The beginning was very tough for Marlene as she faced body aches in her knees, which were excruciatingly painful. Slowly, she started getting used to the whole thing, and the pain in her body disappeared.

Marlene continued this for four years, with her body becoming much fitter than before. Looking at the results, her son suggested that she should join a gym to fully get her fitness regime on point. This transition wasn’t easy at all. Talking to Women’s Health, she said, “Honestly, it took time to build confidence. I wasn’t used to working out with other people, and frankly, I was uncomfortable. But I’m so proud I toughed it out.”

She added, “Once I joined a gym at 62, I was able to channel trauma into strength training and unlock my true potential.” The gym has helped her strengthen her muscles, which is rare at her age. Marlene Flowers has a very clear gym routine. Every day she wakes up and does abs exercises, which makes her feel very strong. After that, she does strength training, dedicating each day to a different body part like the chest, back, and shoulders.

Marlene also incorporates light cardio on the cycle once a week. Her favorite area to train is her back, though her main goal is simply to get stronger each day. Judging by her wins at Miss Muscle and Fitness 2022 and other competitions, she’s clearly succeeding. Along the way, Marlene’s journey has also brought her valuable life lessons.
