All in all, The Terminator became a successful franchise with a good response at the box office. Everyone appreciated his remarkable role, but one admirer stood out. He was non-other than his biggest bodybuilding rival, Sylvester Stallone.
How Arnold Schwarzenegger got a compliment from his biggest rival
The former rivals came together in a Terry Wogan show that aired on October 23, 1991. Wogan interviewed Sylvester Stallone, Arnold, and Bruce Willis in New York for the opening of Planet Hollywood.
During the interview, Sylvester, while appreciating the Austrian-Oak, said with a pinch of compliment, “I couldn’t play the Terminator, I know that, and, bruce, what he did with die hard, it’s again a definitive character. They don’t you align it to Rambo, but that’s really, that’s not true, it’s totally a different kind of character. So I think we’ve all carved out our niches, and they really don’t overlap that much.”
As Sylvester complimented the seven-time Mr.Olympia title winner, it showed a glimpse of their old rivalry. When the two first met at the 1977 Golden Globe ceremony, there were some weird circumstances due to the awards. While Schwarzenegger won the ‘New Star of the Year’ award, Sylvester threw bowl flowers at him. Once during an interview with Variety, Stallone said, ‘from that moment, even our DNA hated each other.’
The end of their rivalry
The two had a long history of differences, they were the leading action superheroes of the golden decades. Their competition increased when Sylvester got cast in the movie ‘Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!’ The movie turned out to be the biggest disappointment of his career. Meanwhile, Arnold took the opportunity to take a dig at it.
