Over the course of his elaborate career, Arnold Schwarzenegger earned a lot of wealth. Currently, this bodybuilder-turned-actor is worth $450 million. Even when he wasn’t as accomplished as he is now, Schwarzenegger worked hard to earn a living for himself. The 75-year-old was prideful enough to never want to borrow money from anyone. And, when he faced a situation where he had to borrow money from a 21-year-old Maria Shriver, the bodybuilding legend felt nothing but embarrassment.

In one of his books, Schwarzenegger has given a detailed account of how a young Maria Shriver once helped him when he was penniless at an airport. Little did they know at the time, that the same young girl would be his wife in the future.

In his book Total Recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger recalled his experience of meeting Maria Shriver and the Kennedy family for the first time in 1977. In August of that year, Arnold Schwarzenegger flew to New York to attend the Robert F. Kennedy Celebrity Tennis Tournament. There he met Shriver, who later invited him over to the Kenndey’s. Going with the flow, Schwarzenegger followed her, leaving his belongings in his hotel room.

Schwarzenegger realized what a big mistake he made by leaving his belongings when he had to attend church in tennis shorts the next day. However, that wasn’t the worst part of it all. The most embarrassing moment for Schwarzenegger came when he stood near the ticket counter at the airport after spending a good day with the Kennedys.

“Maria took me to the airport, and we were talking by the ticket counter when I remembered I had no money. Maria had to write a check for my airfare. Having to ask a twenty-one-year-old girl to lend me money sent my temperature up about a hundred degrees from embarrassment,” Schwarzenegger wrote. This left the bodybuilder in a frenzy until he paid the sum back.

In his book, the Austrian Oak mentioned he had asked Ronda to “write out a check right away.” He informed Ronda that Shriver had lent him sixty dollars. He wanted to “get that money back as quick as possible.” Eventually, he sent the money back in time with a thank you note attached to it.
