When it comes to competing, bodybuilding is a sport that is primarily focused on the physique and physical endurance to control muscle growth. During competitions, besides physical appearances, an athlete’s other physical features, including height, could also play a huge role in winning some of the prestigious bodybuilding championships. However, IFBB pro bodybuilder Maria Wattel begs to differ.

Height does not create any difference for Wattel

In 2021, Maria Wattel received the Guinness World record for shattering the record of the tallest female bodybuilder. While many appreciated the athlete for her incredible physique, including her height and muscles, Wattel said it is not the same with the bodybuilding judges. In one of her Instagram posts, the bodybuilder revealed how the jury often outcasts her due to her height. She wrote, “Hell will freeze over by the time they start rewarding FEMALE athletes in our sport the way THEY REWARD tall MEN.”

According to Wattel, tall female bodybuilders are treated negatively, unlike their male compatriots. According to her, instead of appreciating athletes like her, t the bodybuilding authorities look down upon them. Wattel further explained, “And I am not the only tall athlete who has experienced this.. it is very very very different and more difficult to create a well balanced muscular physique when TALL for both sexes, yet women tend to end up with the short end of the stick.”

Amidst such startling comments that saw Wattel explicitly point fingers at the bodybuilding fraternity, it is noteworthy that this was not the first time the tallest bodybuilder voiced her opinion against such unfairness.

In another of her Instagram posts, the tallest bodybuilder believes that the current bodybuilding world is more focused “over the physical limit and freak or schredded.” Wattel believes if she had competed in the sport during the 80s or 90s era, her physique would have gained more respect from the judges. However, all this has never let the bodybuilder down. She continues to compete in championships, regardless of the biases she faces due to her height.

But Wattel’s posts make one wonder whether the women in the sport still suffer. Or is it just Maria Wattel, who has been blessed with an incredible height?
