Heath Ledger is one of those names that strikes hard when we retrospect on the great actors Hollywood was ever graced by. The late Australian actor’s most notable work was his iconic role as The Joker in the 2008 movie, The Dark Knight. Moreover, his phenomenal display of creativity as the mysterious antagonist enchanted the world. However, the essence of the character was maintained by the splendid make-up that Ledger and make-up artist John Caligone Jr. developed. 

In a recent article by Nation World, the actor’s incredible transformation was analyzed, and how the minute elements designed to make the character both frightening and chaotic were discussed. Read on to know more about the massive efforts that went into the greatest villain of all time. 

How the Joker was made?

As per the source, Ledger’s personification of a disorderly and uncanny clown was beyond imagination. The team hadn’t expected such a response from the actor. His best wingman, Caligone Jr. earned himself an Academy Award nomination for the art he created. Even though the Joker resembled vaguely to that of previous ones, he successfully depicted the Joker’s animosity in his makeup in a path-breaking manner. 

Furthermore, the face art was adapted from traditional theatrical methods and took hours to create. Ledger put it on and slept in it for weeks without wiping it off. Besides, director, Christopher Nolan sent a set of abstract paintings to Caligone to help derive any inspiration for the character’s look.

Fast forward to the present, the actor’s portrayal of Joker is a signature look for the character that is imprinted in the hearts of the film industry, the only anti-hero that was way more popular than the hero himself. The movie and Joker specifically earned numerous prestigious awards in addition to mass recognition. Even NBA legend, Kobe Bryant confessed to being inspired by it.

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant set records on the 2nd of February, 2009 with his grand game against the New York Knicks with a 126-117 score. Bryant scored a great 61 and rewrote the record for the highest single-game score at the Madison Square Garden. When interviewed on the same, he spoke of his inspiration, Heath Ledger

“Because I stayed up watching Batman, watching Heath Ledger. And then I went and started researching about Heath Ledger. How he got into character and how he just became all consuming. That inspired me to go into my Garden mode,” he revealed.
