Arnold Schwarzenegger and his ‘need for speed’

After learning to drive the “military vehicle,” Arnie had successfully brought a 1951 M-47 Patton tank from his homeland to the States. Although he has driven tanks in films and for certain noble causes, the actor disclosed how it once killed nearly 15 people.

Once, Schwarzenegger conducted a “tank race” from a hilltop with a friend in the middle of the night. In a rush to show off his driving skills, Schwarzenegger missed an important detail, which he noticed after winning the race. “I realized that the whole infantry, 15 guys that were standing on the top of the tank. I totally forgot to tell them to get off the tank,” confessed Schwarzenegger.

As soon as the audience heard this, they broke into laughter, along with the actor and the host. He added, “So they were just holding on, and then they were falling off, and I heard the screams the whole time [imitates screaming actions]. By the time I got to the bottom, there was no one in the tank except I was in the tank.”

In 1965, the “Austrian Oak” worked in the Austrian military to fulfill the one-year required services as a citizen. Although Schwarzenegger has excellent tank driving skills later during his service, as someone new to the field, he was not naturally talented.

Hence, while driving the vehicle once, he accidentally drove the tank backward and hit a wall and gas pipes. However, he soon went to report the incident to another officer, hoping for help. Instead, Schwarzenegger nearly gave the person and heart attack when he described the incident.
