After starting his career in the entertainment industry in the 1980s, Ricky Gervais has nearly done it all. Gervais is an incredibly diverse resume, which includes making music, acting, directing, and comedy. He gained worldwide renown after creating the comedy TV show, The Office, but is equally popular for his no-holds-bar, unfiltered comedy acts. In fact, Gervais has landed in hot water many times due to his unfiltered and politically incorrect jokes. In 2020, the comedian became the talk of the town after roasting everything from bodybuilding to electronic giant Apple at the 77th edition of the Golden Globes.

Gervais laid down a barrage of jokes at the expense of the performers present at the award show. While talking about the popularity of superhero movies, the seven-time BAFTA winner didn’t hold back, ridiculing the unrealistic bodybuilding physique transformations of the actors who star in those movies.

By 2020, streaming services like Netflix and HBO had already made a mark on the mainstream film industry. In fact, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, one of the nominees for Best Picture only had a limited theatrical release, later released worldwide through Netflix. “All the best actors have jumped to Netflix and HBO,” said the host.

“The actors who just do Hollywood movies now do fantasy adventure nonsense,” added Gervais. “They wear masks and capes and wear tight costumes,” he said. However, the most controversial comment was yet to come. “Their job is acting anymore. It’s going to the gym twice a day and taking steroids,” said The Office creator.

Ricky Gervais sarcastically called out the Hollywood culture of physical transformations. From Chris Hemsworth to Kumail Nanjiani, actors who star as superheroes often dramatically change their physiques, sometimes within months. Gervais ended the joke at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards with the punchline, “Have we got an award for most ripped junkie?”

The audience had a wide array of reactions after Gervais’ joke. While many laughed, some actors, like Tom Hanks, cringed. However, the comedian still had a few things to say about the superhero genre.

Agreeing with Martin Scorsese only to roast him

The actor voiced his distaste for the entire genre. “Martin Scorsese, the greatest living director, made the news for his controversial comments about the Marvel franchise,” he said. “He (Scorcese) says they’re not real cinema… I agree,” said Gervais.

He also mentioned that the legendary filmmaker had equated Marvel movies to “theme parks.” However, while Ricky Gervais agreed with Scorsese, he also roasted him. “Although I don’t know what he’s doing, hanging around theme parks,” said Gervais.
