As the 2022 Mr. Olympia season is fast approaching, the hype is increasing. It’s just a few more weeks before the fans see their favorite walk on the stage. Though to know the winner’s name, one needs to be patient now; one, however, can not help but wonder about the road to success. Be it Arnold Schwarzenegger or his rival Frank Zane, each bodybuilding legend had their secret mantra. While it worked for them, the chance stands low that it will work for others.

As Frank sat for an interview with David Robinson in 2019, the three-time Mr. Olympia Champion had a lot to share about the ‘general rules in bodybuilding.’

Arnold’s rival at a different perspective

Frank made it clear in bodybuilding that there are “no general rules.” Each person and their physique is different. What may work for one may not work for the other. He acknowledged that “there is no one way to do it.” Contrary to what Arnold follows, Franks stands against “doing forced reps.”

He says, “things you don’t want to do are things that are dangerous, and that might hurt you.” He explained that with advancing age, one stands at a “greater risk of getting injured.” Though passionate about his body, he stands against doing “dangerous, stupid stuff.” Thus, for his convenience, he has modified the gym equipment.

While working out, he made sure “of never doing less than six repetitions per set with most movements, and nothing higher than 12.” For Arnold, the rule applied to most body parts, including his calves.

Arnold may have turned 75, but there is no slowing down for the Terminator star. Considered one of the best bodybuilders, the former Governor of California insists on staying fit. He is regularly seen hitting the gym. During his prime, his training encompassed a strategy that revolved around extremely high volume and frequency.

He attempted to grow mass through the Split style. The seven-time Mr. Olympia champion focused on key muscles 2-3 times per week. The advanced-level workout lasted for four months. Each season lasted for around 1 hour and 75 minutes for almost six days a week. During his training, Arnold would use instruments like bodyweight, EZ bars, cables, barbells, and dumbbells.
