“Got a Little High on Our Own Supply”: James Cameron Blamed Arnold Schwarzenegger for Terminator: Dark Fate’s Terrible Box Office Performance

The iconic bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger is known for his cyborg assassin role in the Terminator movies. The Austrian Oak is quite commonly known as the Terminator star. Such was the impact of the film and Schwarzenegger’s performance. Out of all the six Terminator films, the sixth sequel, Terminator: Dark Fate,  was a huge flop at the box office. The film’s producer recently hinted that Schwarzenegger might be one of the reasons why the film failed to impress the audience.

Although it featured everyone’s favorite bodybuilder actor Schwarzenegger, even then, the movie did not live up to people’s expectations. In a recent interview with Deadline, the movie’s producer James Cameron revealed that his 40-year-long friendship with Schwarzenegger might have been a reason behind Dark Fate’s failure.

In 2019, the Terminator movie franchise released its sixth movie titled Terminator: Dark Fate. This movie is considered a direct sequence to Terminator 2 -Judgement Day, which came out in 1991. However, unlike the second film which was a mega-hit at the box office, the sequel was a disaster.

Cameron did not blame Schwarzenegger but explained how the lead actors’ age might have affected the audience’s perspective. While explaining his point Cameron said, “I think what happened is I think the movie could have survived having Linda in it, I think it could have survived having Arnold in it, but when you put Linda and Arnold in it and then, you know, she’s 60 something, he’s 70 something, all of a sudden it wasn’t your Terminator movie, it wasn’t even your dad’s Terminator movie, it was your granddad’s Terminator movie.”

Although Cameron wished to feature Schwarzenegger, the decision might have not been a beneficial move. Hence he confessed, “So, it was just our own myopia. We kind of got a little high on our own supply and I think that’s the lesson there.” Although this Terminator movie did not do well, the movie franchise is one of the biggest reasons why Schwarzenegger is one of the top actors in the industry.

How Terminator made Schwarzenegger a “household” name?

Schwarzenegger, who always wanted to become a star actor, started his acting career in the early 80s. Since then, he played lead roles and was doing well in the film industry.

But his breakthrough came when he was featured in Conan the Barbarian, which did extremely well at the box office. However, the 1984 Terminator film marked Schwarzenegger’s journey to stardom. With the movie’s success, the legendary bodybuilder became one of the most known actors in the world. It also led to five sequels, turning the movie into a famous franchise. Even today, Schwarzenegger is closely related to the franchise and has not parted ways with it
