Former strongman, Eddie Hall, recently revealed his personal mantra for tackling a disease that the most decorated Olympian in history, Michael Phelps, also a victim of from his childhood. The 34-year-old recently spoke to Volt Fitness in a November 2022 interview, where the athlete discussed how exercise helped him cope with ADHD.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, also known as ADHD, affects the development of a person’s brain and influences their attention span. Edward Stephen Hall recalled his own childhood when he realized that he had ADHD, while also noticing similar behavioral patterns in his own son. In addition, he provided his own opinion on the best cure for the ailment.

Eddie Hall and Michael Phelps suffered from a common disease

The English athlete who is also an actor, and a boxer is known for winning the World’s Strongest Man 2017 competition, besides other accolades like UK’s Strongest Man, Britain’s Strongest Man, as well as England’s Strongest Man multiple times. 

 

In his formative years, Hall realized that he has ADHD. As a teenager, he used to keep himself engaged in activities like swimming, similar to Phelps. Setting a national record for the ‘Viking Hold’, Eddie Hall’s name was etched in history as he finished first at the 2011 UK’s Strongest Man competition that was held in Belfast. Hall managed to hold on to 44lbs axes in each hand at full stretch for 78 seconds.

Upon being questioned why he was so active in sports from the tender age of twelve, the athlete states, “Well, I think there is not really a single answer for that… Now I’ve grown up and I’ve got a son of my own, and he has got a lot of what they call disabilities but I don’t… I suppose the worst one is ADHD, where they’re just hyperactive. He’s always bouncing about… the best cure for it is exercise because it expels all the energy.”

The Strongman realized he was just the same

Eddie Hall was what you would call the notorious one in the classroom in his childhood. He was expelled from Clayton Hall Academy at 15, after which he started homeschooling. In retrospect, Hall believes that his difficulties in school were due to his ADHD. Furthermore, his parents also noticed that Eddie used to behave in the same manner as a child, which led to the conclusion that the strongman was also afflicted with the disorder.

Edward believes that he never had a problem with learning, he only fell behind due to his behavior. In conclusion, he adds, “I was definitely a victim of that. I definitely had ADHD… Learning was easy, behaving wasn’t.”
