It is inevitable even for a person of supernatural will and drive to surrender to the limitations a human body imposes. Perhaps, during his peak phase, the pain was merely an indication of progress for the bodybuilding legend, Ronnie Coleman. The shape, strength, and fullness the bodybuilding G.O.A.T has attained in his physique is the massive result of years of weightlifting and stringent adherence to his workout regime.

As much as he has set the bar high for the bodybuilding community, he deteriorated his health to an irreparable condition. Undoubtedly, enduring pain is not new to the eight-time Mr. Olympia, considering the humungous weights he lifted. But, in a 2021 interview, the strong and energetic Ronnie himself confessed the agonizing pain he is suffering.

From pain is pleasure to pain is pressure

Fair to say, while most bodybuilders questioned themselves about how much weight they could lift, Coleman probably thought about how much more weight he could lift. He engaged in intense routines to build a mammoth-sized body that was aesthetically balanced and proportional. The routine consisted of 2,300-pound leg presses, 540-pound T-bar rows, 200-pound incline dumbbell presses, and 700-pound behind-the-back shrugs.

The big man didn’t pay heed to the possible after-effects as a result of dealing with heavy weights of a minimum of 150 pounds with more reps than what the standards recommend. After 13 surgeries and fixing his body with screws, bolts, and cages put in him, he is only left with more pain than ever. In a 2021 interview, he said he was always very energetic.

The screws, nuts, and cages have made Ronnie stiff. He said that he used to be able to bend over and perform some “crazy” stretches. “I can’t do that no more,”  he said. Also, he admitted once that his condition worsened due to hitting the gym despite doctors’ advice not to work out. It has made him dependent on either a wheelchair or crutches to move around.
