Today, at 75, he is still relentless in his pursuit of bringing wholesome content of gaining good health to his readers. This time, Schwarzenegger shares a scary stat of cardiovascular deaths.

This time, as usual, he covers three different topics – “FUBAR”, his upcoming Netflix series, “Bad Sleeper? Try this“, and “How to deal with stress?” The 2nd topic is where he delves into research-backed stats to explain the devastating effects of sleep deprivation. Here it is.

Arnold Schwarzenegger finds a scary correlation between sleep and heart risk

In his newsletter, ‘Arnold’s Pump Club’, Schwarzenegger writes, “In general, people who were sleep deprived (anything less than 6 hours per night) and didn’t get enough exercise were linked to a 69 percent elevated risk of cardiovascular death”. The study was done on more than 90,000 adults aged between 40 and 72. While it reads like a shocking scary statistic up-front, it is driven by research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

However, sleeplessness has been a major growing concern for people, especially in urban areas. With a busier, more work-driven lifestyle, the average sleep hours of a person have taken a toll. The section starts with the line, “A good night of sleep can go a long way to making you leaner, limiting hunger, improving brain health, and helping you live longer”. The benefits of a good night’s sleep are myriad. But not all of them can get it nowadays.

Therefore, for them, Schwarzenegger suggests that a daily exercise of half an hour could go a long way in preventing any long-term heart disease. He wrote, “You’ll need to train at a moderate-to-high intensity (translation: getting your heart rate elevated) for more than 150 minutes per week.”

Schwarzenegger’s own ordeal with multiple heart surgeries

Arnold Schwarzenegger himself has had some experience with heart surgeries. His first of three surgeries happened on April 16, 1997. Later on, during the promotion of Batman & Robin, he talked about how there were 12 surgeons in his OT for his bypass surgery. On March 30, 2018, he underwent a 2nd heart valve surgery. And in 2020, he underwent a 3rd surgery on his heart. But these were not a result of sleeplessness, instead, a toll on his health after years of bulking up for muscles.

In his newsletter, Schwarzenegger also suggests that one can always break up longer training sessions into smaller workout sessions. A 30-minute workout session for five days a week could be a great start. It will go a long way in preventing any debilitating heart conditions. The exercise timings can slowly increase from there onwards. A generic exercise could slowly transform into “bodyweight exercises, walking on an incline, running, sports, or trucking”.
