Arnold Schwarzenegger is today a household name and an inspiration to generations. Schwarzenegger made his name as a bodybuilder, an actor, a model, and the Governor of California. However, Schwarzenegger’s life, especially his childhood, wasn’t a simple one.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria in 1947. He hailed from a low-income family with strict parents who weren’t always supportive of his dreams. But this did not stop Schwarzenegger from pursuing his dreams. In an interview with Grunge in March 2022, Schwarzenegger opened up about how he craved personal recognition since childhood.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s quest for personal recognition

Nigel Andrews’ book, True Myths: The Life and Times of Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed Schwarzenegger had been into sports since childhood. Schwarzenegger showed interest in soccer but soon started preferring bodybuilding over it. Arnold Schwarzenegger claimed that he was not a fan of team sports. 

Schwarzenegger said, “I disliked it when we won a game and I didn’t get personal recognition.” Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to make an identity for himself and stand out. Schwarzenegger knew it would take a lot of hard work, but he stayed committed to his goal.

Arnold Schwarzenegger then started lifting weights and focused on building a robust physique. He once opened up about his dream of going to the States and becoming a Hollywood actor to his parents. His father thought Arnold was delusional and asked him to serve in the Army instead.

Arnold Schwarzenegger joined the Austrian Army in 1965 and started working on his body. The officers often mocked him for dreaming of being a bodybuilder. Schwarzenegger finally escaped the military camp to pursue his dreams.

Schwarzenegger won his first Mr. Universe title in 1967. He participated in his first Mr. Olympia contest in 1969 but could not win. Next year, at 23, he became the youngest ever Mr. Olympia winner. Schwarzenegger then brought home the Mr. Olympia trophy consecutively from 1970 to 1975.

In 1970, Schwarzenegger also made his Hollywood debut with Hercules and never looked back. He has given superhits like The Terminator, Total Recall, and Predator.
