But the people of Ukraine did not stand back and fought for their rights. Now, a year later, when many of them are voicing their plight, and the effect the war had on them, Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s ex-wife and the former first lady of California, Maria Shriver, is hailing them for their bravery, courage, and for being a beacon of light for the entire world.

Taking to her Twitter, she expressed her gratitude to the Ukrainians, on behalf of the entire world, for being a source of inspiration. After dominating every news headline for the past 365 days, the Ukrainians’ voice echoes louder and stronger. Here’s how she remembers them for their valor.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been a year. Ukrainians have inspired the world with their determination, their resolve, their people, and their courage. But the loss has been and continues to be devastating”, wrote Maria Shriver on her Twitter. The member of the Kennedy family has been a staunch advocate for Ukraine throughout this war and has voiced her opinion on their right to freedom and democracy. She has now joined millions around the globe to pay her respects to the war-torn families and those who lost their lives in the fight.

Shriver shared a Washington Post article alongside her tweet, which opens with the line, “The war has torn families apart. Many have lost homes, relatives, or friends. Others have lost their jobs and dreams. Everyone has been robbed of their sense of security… No one has been left untouched”. In a period that will go down in history as one of the darkest in their nation, there are but points to be taken into account.

Ukrainian civilians joined the resistance to help the country for the greater good, and they were not alone. Be it Maria Shriver being vocal about their plight or her ex-husband Arnold Schwarzenegger doing his bit. And in such a situation, every gesture counts.

Everyone did their bit, including Arnold Schwarzenegger

In a heartwarming gesture, bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger increased the prize money for a Ukrainian bodybuilder to match the winner. As an activist and former California governor, Schwarzenegger has always concerned himself with political tensions around the world. It was only appropriate that the 7X Mr. Olympia made an effort to alleviate their woes by helping out Oleksii Novikov.
