During his preparing days for the Mr. Olympia contest, Arnold structured his day with a routine of gym, tan, and laundry, widely recognized as GTL. He followed a strict routine with winning habits and worked towards making himself one step closer to his goal daily. Getting a perfect tan was very crucial as it makes the muscles appear more defined. In a 2012 interview, the 7 x Mr. Olympia recounted his experiences trying to get the perfect tan.

Arnold Schwarzenegger discovered how to get a tan all around

The commonly practiced way to achieve it was by lying on the beach and getting roasted in the sun until the advent of indoor tanning that began in the early 20th century. The existing practices did not convince Arnold to get tanned, as stated in his remark, “a tan that su*ked.”

He explained the practical difficulties of not getting a complete tan, stating that when people lie in the sun, it tans the front and back, “but they’re not tanned around down beneath the arms and everywhere.” Furthermore, he shared a better option that met his objective of a competition-worthy tan. It was to train outdoors on Venice’s Muscle Beach.

While describing the outdoor gym, Schwarzenegger said it was small. However, it had the advantage of getting an even tan. “When you did your chin-ups, your presses, your curls, you got the tan everywhere. Then we would run over to the ocean, jump in the waves, get the salt water all over, and again, get tan all around.”

Why is tanning a big deal?

Bodybuilders use tanning to make themselves look better and to give their muscular bodies a high-definition look on the stage. Fake sprays have been around for a long time. Also, over time, the level of tan has changed with a preference for darker shades to appear more toned and defined.

Besides enhancing their muscular and symmetrical physique, it also helps to cover blemishes. A fresh spray can sometimes decide whether you win or lose. Arnold didn’t make it in his first attempt in 1969. The following year, the seven-time Mr. Olympia won his first title at just 20, making him the youngest to win the title.
