The joy of being grandparents is special. And Arnold Schwarzenegger and his ex-wife Maria Shriver are experiencing that. Their eldest daughter, Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt, has two daughters, the former couple dot on. Being grandparents for the first time, the experience has been surreal for both. Therefore, they’ve chosen to personalize this experience in the best way they can.

In a recent interview with Yahoo, Katherine spoke about her newly released book on the bond shared between sisters. While talking about her family and her sisters, she mentioned how her daughters reflected the bond. Being sisters suited the theme even. However, this also led to Katherine opening up about what her daughters called their grandparents – and the nicknames given are unique!

How do Katherine’s daughters address Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver?

In her book Good Night, Sister, Katherine recounts the relationship she shared with her sister, Christina Schwarzenegger, and how it was unique. That was until Katherine saw her two daughters and the bond they shared. In the interview, the eldest Schwarzenegger revealed that her daughters mirrored herself and Christina, and their parents were the first to observe that.

Both Arnold and Maria dotted on the girls. And being first-time grandparents, they were excited to take in the experience to its fullest. Both wanted the girls to call them by unique nicknames and not just ordinary addresses like “grandpa” or “grandma”. Katherine revealed her parents had come up with some uncommon nicknames, both carrying their backstories.

Paying homage to his Austrian heritage, Arnold insisted that his granddaughters called him “Opa”. The word is German for Grandpa. Meanwhile, Maria took a page out of her brother’s book. Timothy Shriver took a non-traditional approach and went by G daddy for his grandchildren. Therefore, Maria chose the nickname “Mama G” for herself. Katherine considers her parents to be incredible grandparents, and while she loves her father to bits, she once got protective when Arnold held her baby.

Katherine freaked out once when her father held her baby

With handling children, Arnold Schwarzenegger is probably one of the most experienced people around. With five children of his own, the former bodybuilder has often provided well-meaning advice and experience about raising kids the right way. Yet, when his eldest daughter handed him her baby, she freaked out.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, the Terminator star revealed how Katherine was a gatekeeper and would chide him for holding her baby in a certain way. Meanwhile, he would retort that he has had enough experience with kids to know how to hold a baby. However, it would all be in good taste since the star understood that it was natural for Katherine to freak out. In fact, the author has revealed on several occasions how she was grateful for Arnold being there and watching over her girls.
