The sporting world of strength competitions tests the limits of its pursuers. From heavy weightlifting to hulking deadlifts, the strongman events have everything covered. While these competitions make a solid platform for encouraging fitness fanatics, it also renders many life-threatening injuries to those enthusiasts. One such icon who fell prey to many ferocious abrasions while lifting weights is none other than, Robert Oberst. 

American strongman, Robert Oberst has a series of world championships to his name. However, while winning the contests, Oberst was subjected to various mishaps while lifting the massive weights. The retired professional once opened up about the injuries he suffered during his prime. 

Robert Oberst talked about his worst injury

In 2020, Obie appeared in an episode of the Joe Rogan podcast, where he talked about the worst injuries he had during his prime days. At one point, he talked about the lesion he got during the Strongman competition in Africa. 

In the video uploaded on the YouTube channel JRE Clips, Oberst recalled how the judge of the show called him to participate in the Hercules hold.

As per Oberst, Hercules hold tests the limit of the athlete by testing the time for which the athlete can hold each of the falling pillars with open arms. However, when Obie went on the podium to perform the hold, a tendon in his bicep got hurt. “It’s yanking a tendon further up into your bicep and I felt that creeping up into my shoulder”, added Oberst.

Sharing his positive outlook on his injury, the now retired world champion stated, “I did great”. However, it took him two years to fully recover from the injury.

Following his arm injury, Oberst underwent surgery and rehab for a quick recovery. Elaborating on his 2-year journey toward robustness, Obie mentioned, “I finally fought back”. In 2019, the champion made it to the finals arena. “I made it back to the finals. I’m now again top 10 strongest men in the world”, added Obie.

While it was difficult to cope with such fierce injuries, Obie never lost hope. Or, we can simply say it in Oberst’s words, “you never know what kind of athlete you are until you got tested”.
