Dating Shriver for eight years before marriage, Arnold Schwarzenegger was once taken aback by Maria Shriver’s behavior. In his autobiography Total Recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger described Shriver’s shabby treatment towards a cashmere sweater, highlighting her lavish lifestyle. Born in the Kennnedy lineage, while Shriver earned an honest living as a journalist and author in her own right, one can’t deny that she had inherited a sizeable fortune and legacy. In fact, the bodybuilding legend was once poverty-stricken and naturally had many lifestyle differences from that of his ex-wife. The Austrian Oak had to work to earn at the age of 15 while Shriver was away completing her high school education in Paris. This materialized into a few pages of his autobiography.

The differences were stark and Maria’s lavish undertone surprised Arnold. Even though her negligence for a cashmere sweater did not upset the apple cart, as parents, they brought their unique set of values to the table. While two vastly different worlds were bound by love, there was a memory or two that the Austrian was rekindled with during the early days of their marriage.

Schwarzenegger recalled, “I remember my shock when I first got to know Maria, who had grown up with people to pick after her.” Continuing, he related, “She’d come into the house and take off her sweater-it was a cashmere sweater-and if it fell on the floor, that’s where it stayed.”

Schwarzenegger implied that after their marriage, Shriver gradually developed a tenacity for cleanliness. In fact, The Austrian Oak told how they developed their own approach towards parenting their four kids, where they would pamper kids, without losing sight of the importance of discipline and salt-of-the-earth values.

Accounting for the differences in their upbringing, the Schwarzenegger household had quiet table manners. “But in Maria’s family growing up, they all shared what they’d done that day,” he recounted.  Later he admitted that while he was good at communicating, Shriver helped to create an atmosphere of fun at the dinner table. “She brought her family’s atmosphere to the table”, he spoke.

This was not the only time Schwarzenegger opened up about his ex-wife Maria Shriver. In his autobiography Total Recall, Schwarzenegger also told how once he didn’t want anyone to see him due to a shocking act by Maria Shriver.

The Austrian Oak had purchased a Jeep Cherokee Chief with an amazing sound system and loved driving this car. However, Shriver and her acquaintance Bonnie Reiss marred his happiness by sticking ’80 bumper stickers of Kennedy, as a part of the Democratic Party campaign.

Hence, driving this car was a little awkward for Schwarzenegger as he belonged to the Republican Party. There was also a high possibility of people making fun of him for driving a car with stickers of the opposition party. “But now when we drive to town, I’d sink a little lower in the seat, hoping that no one would see me”, Schwarzenegger admitted in his autobiography.
