Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) or steroids used in bodybuilding have been there for generations. It is said that steroids provide unfair advantages to bodybuilders during competitions.

Why Ronnie Coleman started taking steroids

Ronnie Coleman has never restrained himself in talking about the use of steroids. He began bodybuilding at 24 and started using steroids at 30 after staying clean for 6 years. He claims he began using steroids because he was “tired of getting his a*s kicked,” in bodybuilding events.

It is nearly impossible to win the Mr. Olympia competition without using steroids. Coleman got his supply of steroids from Flex Wheeler, one of his rivals.

The DEA was suspicious of Ronnie

The DEA, Drug Enforcement Agency, attempted to counter the black steroid market during that time. They aimed to have a tight grip on the supply of steroids, and Coleman’s stunning physique made them suspicious.

Ronnie Coleman purchased his steroids from a source that mandated blood tests and prescriptions. Ronnie Coleman had to face the DEA even after purchasing his drugs legally. “They came, took us all in front of grand juries, and forced us to testify,” told Coleman.

Coleman then got his prescriptions for growth hormones and testosterone from doctors and handed them to the DEA during competitions. He took blood tests regularly and made sure not to break any laws while purchasing or using steroids. “We would go to these pharmacies, and they would take your blood, you know, because you’re a certain age, you can take testosterone. You know I did everything legally, where I would go to pharmacies and take these blood tests, and they would write a prescription for everything we took,” said Coleman. At many times, Coleman has also made it clear that he does not support using steroids for bodybuilding.
