In an interview, Lou Ferrigno once talked about his father. In it, Lou Ferrigno talks about his love-hate relationship with him and even mentions his childhood struggles. Ferrigno has 85% hearing loss, diagnosed when he was just three years old. Despite all the struggles, he managed to have a huge and successful career. He is also an inspiration to the hearing impaired community. The complexity his father had about him was very harsh on his childhood, but still, he didn’t really hate him.

Lou Ferrigno hails from Brooklyn, New York. As a child with hearing loss, it was hard for him to survive school. While staying with a father who did not even like his child because of his disability. But Ferrigno fought against all odd and achieved his goals by became a two-time IFBB Mr. Universe. He was also given the role of his favorite comic book hero, the Hulk.

Alternating emotions affecting Lou Ferrigno

Lou Ferrigno was an introvert during his childhood. He was not able to interact with people properly because of his inability to hear, which also affected his way of talking. Ferrigno’s father was also not much of a supporter either.

“I have kind of like you would say a love and hate relationship with my father growing up,” Ferrigno said and continued, “Because he had a hard time accepting me having a handicap.” 

“Because I wasn’t perfect,” Ferrigno said. As if he wasn’t struggling enough with his hearing loss, but also, his father wasn’t ready to accept the reality.

Although his hatred wasn’t that bad. Ferrigno’s father tried to push him into his battles on his own so that he could learn about the world out there. He even gave him advice to never feel sorry about himself.

Comic book character that helped Ferrigno

Ferrigno didn’t have a great childhood, which made him want to vent his problems. His only way to do it was by reading superhero comics. His situation made him a power-hungry person, and he admired the Hulk a lot.

Ferrigno was taken aback when he was offered the role of Hulk in the Incredible Hulk TV series. He never imagined in his life that he would one day become the superhero he admired as a kid. It was both great and emotional for him at the same time.

Hulk made him feel powerful despite his inability that made him socially unacceptable. He tried hard for roles in movies, but was turned down due to his shortcomings. But Ferrigno never stopped trying, and he was able to achieve success.
