Bodybuilding Legend Arnold Schwarzenegger Had to Earn His Breakfast With a Tough Task During Childhood

Austrian-American Arnold Schwarzenegger saw a lot of success in the USA after he moved here in 1968, speaking little to no English. Despite a rocky start, he made a name for himself as a bodybuilder, a movie star, a businessman, and a politician.

But before he got his start in the US, he lived a tough life in Austria, where his father raised him with strict discipline.

In an interview with Men’s Health, the seven-time Mr. Olympia title holder was prodded on his work ethic. Being an immigrant, Schwarzenegger had a slew of unique experiences. He answered, “What mentality does it take to leave your home? And to leave your parents, your friends, and your country and start fresh? My upbringing was tough.”

Arnold was raised by Catholic parents. His father, Gustav Schwarzenegger, was a local police chief. His family was rigid, and Arnold grew up familiar with the notion of punishment. 

“My father made me do push-ups before I was allowed to have breakfast. To earn breakfast, as he said, you have to do push-ups and knee bends,” he added.

Arnold has earlier also spoken up about his father’s alcoholism and cruel and abusive tendencies. From a very young age, Arnold knew he had to fight for his independence. And he found his ticket to America through bodybuilding.

Arnold’s journey to America

In the interview, Arnold shared how his rough childhood made his ambition burn hotter. He added, “My desire, therefore, was really great. It was like that or nothing. There was no plan B.”

He took his first step in breaking away from his family by joining the Austrian army to fulfill his one year of mandatory service. It was here he won his first bodybuilding contest and later competed all over Europe. When he won the title of Mr. Universe, he finally found the opportunity to move to America.

He continued his pursuit of bodybuilding, and in 1970, at age 23, he captured his first Mr. Olympia title in New York. He subsequently won the title 6 more times (1971-1975, 1980).

Arnold’s path to success was not easy at all. He struggled with many things in different phases of life, never gave up, and came out victorious in the end.
