A diet is essential in every athlete’s routine, especially for strongman competitors and bodybuilders. On several occasions, bodybuilding legends Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronnie Coleman have discussed their diets with the people. However, not many are aware of what a strongman’s diet routine is.
Once, former strongman Robert Oberst shared his food intake while preparing to compete in the strongest man competition. While bodybuilding and strongman are both sports of strength and body, they are different from each other, just like the food requirements.

Last year, when Oberst was preparing for the World’s Strongest Man championship, the athlete shared his beginner’s diet schedule with his followers. Oberst began the video by mentioning his first meal of the day, which included half a bagel, cream cheese, and four ounces of smoked salmon. Besides this, the former strongman had a heavy egg and veggies meal planned up for breakfast.
Since the diet seemed heavy with carbs, Oberst explained, “I am not a bodybuilder. I’m not gonna walk up on the stage with seven percent body fat so I can look shredded. I want to be the strongest I can be, and for that, I have to feel good.”
Oberst’s pre-workout meal was the same as his first meal for the day. For his post-workout, Oberst usually had a banana, some other fruit, honey, and oats with milk. Besides, he also had small portions of snacks (mainly nuts and fruits) planned throughout the day.
Lastly, for dinner, the athlete again had a large meal, included of a big steak, potatoes, and veggies with salad. “I have no clue what it takes to be a bodybuilder, but I do know what it takes to eat clean when you’re lifting heavy, and it’s a lot. It’s a lot of work,” Oberst concluded in his video.

On the other hand, Ronnie Coleman is an exceptional bodybuilder who almost had heavy meals like a strongman while keeping calories in check. “The King” ate six meals a day which contained 5-10% fat, 65% protein, and 20-25% carbs. In total, Coleman consumed around 5000 calories in a day.
