Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler have been two of the most prominent names in the world of bodybuilding. The 8x Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman, and 4x Mr. Olympia, Jay Cutler, competed against each other for the Sandow trophy for almost a decade. Nonetheless, both the champions continued their spree of making it to the top two of Mr. Olympia on six occasions. Four of which were won by Coleman, and two were bagged by Cutler. Now, to share the training drill that he followed to trounce Coleman, Cutler recently revealed his workout regimen with his social media fandom.
The 8x Mr. Olympia defeated Jay Cutler in four Mr. Olympia showdowns in 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005. However, in 2006, and 2007, Cutler stood atop the podium of the reverent stage of Mr. Olympia by defeating the reigning champion Ronnie Coleman. So, what was the workout prompt that Cutler used extensively in order to defeat the King?

Recently, the 49-year-old bodybuilding prodigy pulled off the curtains from his training prompts that he followed during his prime. The bodybuilder cited the advantages of deadlifts and how it worked in his favor. Cutler stated, “Deadlifts in my routine. I was one of these people that believed that deadlifts worked really really well“. Mentioning his approach of performing deadlifts, the 49-year-old added, “I preferred them doing off the floor. But I know a lot of people like to do them off the rack“.
Cutler then explained how lifting weights with a proper set of reps helped him achieve Mr. Olympia’s title two times against Ronnie Coleman. “For me really really worked well. Especially doing the battles against Ronnie Coleman. A lot of those back double biceps I believe the thickness was built off deadlifts. I think it’s a core movement“. Adding to this, the bodybuilder asserted, “I think you can focus on eight repetitions on this six repetitions“.
As per Cutler, deadlifts cover the domains of not just bodybuilding but also powerlifting and heavy weight lifting competitions. “Power lifters use this exercise as you know one of their competition lifts. With repetition range this exercise can be very beneficial. Is it necessary for bodybuilders? That’s the big question. I don’t think it’s necessary for bodybuilding but it’s definitely a plus plus in building the back. Kind of bring the whole body in to play”, added Cutler.
Though Cutler and Coleman have made many heads turn their way through their Mr. Olympia rivalry, the two share a great bond off-stage. Interestingly, both bodybuilders even worked out together during their prime days and continued their spree of reaching to top two, on six occasions.

Though Coleman and Cutler were each other’s on-stage rivals, they often used to work out together. This resulted in them helping each other with different training drills and sharing counsel. Recalling their training days, the 4x Mr. Olympia stated, “I would squat to 400lbs for 12 reps. And he would do 600lbs for 12. And the first rep was exactly like the last rep”.

Interestingly, Cutler once hailed his on-stage rival and applauded his disciplined training prompts. “Everyone has their style, though. I couldn’t train how Ronnie trained”, added Cutler. Although both worked synchronously, they had different approaches to building deltoids. If Coleman anchored his focus on sets and reps, Cutler trained his muscular stature through deadlifts with the defined set of reps. Regardless, legends in their own right, their opinions are known to make a mark.
