Dorian Yates is counted among one of the biggest bodybuilders to appear in competitive bodybuilding. His mammoth physique at his peak stunned the bodybuilding world, as no one had witnessed a bodybuilder so big until then. The 6x Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates had an interview with Jay Vincent where they talked about high-intensity training, training regimens, steroids, and the extensively massive physique of Dorian Yates.

As they talked about the evolution Yates brought into the bodybuilding world, The Shadow confessed that he and The King Ronnie Coleman probably spoiled the bodybuilding sport. Why would he say so?

Chasing an unrealistic expectation

Dorian Yates’ reign came to an end because of the injuries that didn’t allow him to be at his best. However, as he left the stage, a bigger mammal came to replace him. 8x Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman even overshadowed the Mass Monster in terms of size. And they are still two of the biggest bodybuilders the sport has witnessed, as they together reigned for 14 consecutive years. But Yates feels that they have set some unrealistic standards for the younger bodybuilders.

As Vincent asked Yates, “You know, they say you are responsible for the evolution of the Mass Monster.” Yates cut him in between his question, as he replied, “Yeah, the original Mass Monster, whatever they want to call it. I mean, the bar got raised and, you know, Ronnie Coleman raised it again in terms of size.”

He further explained why he feels that the size they gained has become a problem now. He added, “it spoiled bodybuilding because everybody started chasing that, but not everybody can do that.” Moreover, he believes somehow the unrealistic expectations set by them are one of the reasons for the increased use of chemicals in bodybuilding. He said, “they started, I believe, just using more and more chemicals because a guy has genetics like me and Ronnie and uh people like that and also are willing to like just put the work into a crazy degree as not many around.”

Although he believes they together “spoiled the sport,” he also feels that they had the ideal physical structure for bodybuilding.

Indeed, Dorian Yates and Ronnie Coleman had incredible physiques, that stood out from the crowd. The Shadow might have felt that they have set an unrealistic standard for the young bodybuilders, but he feels Ronnie, him and Lee Haney had the ideal physique required for bodybuilding. Earlier this year, Yates shared a picture of himself and Ronnie on Instagram, where he broke down their optimal physique.

As he shared a cool picture of them possibly taken around 2013, he included Haney in the caption. Notably, these three legends account for 22 Mr. Olympia titles altogether. While pointing out the similarities, Yates wrote, “You can notice that we are similar in height being around 5ft 11. The 8x Mr. O, Lee Haney was also the same height too! The ideal structure for bodybuilding includes having longer legs and a shorter torso with wide clavicles. Something all three of us had in common.”

From the 80s to the 2000s, Lee Haney, Dorian Yates, and Ronnie Coleman dominated the sport. But Haney wasn’t as big as the other two. The Shadow and The King boosted and inspired other bodybuilders to hit a whole different target if they wanted to beat them. And as we all know, no one was able to beat them when they were at their peak. However, Jay Cutler beat Coleman in 2006, but he confessed that The King wasn’t at his best by that time. Do you think Yates and Coleman have set an unrealistic target to achieve? Or will there be another bodybuilder who will go to par with what these two achieved physically? Or is there one already going toe to toe to the three? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
