A diagnosis of terminal disease, neurological disorder, or any other type of chronic ailment can be devastating. However, some who have extraordinary moxie, defy the odds and fight with all their might to survive. The story of American businessman and lawyer, Brian Wallach, also glorifies the unquantifiable mental strength with which he is battling a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Nonetheless, for his incredible fortitude, he continues to receive a swarm of support from people across the continents. Interestingly, among his cheerers, the one who took the front seat is none other than American journalist and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex-wife, Maria Shriver.

Brain Wallach was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2017 and was given only six months to live. Wallach could have curled up in a ball and waited for his time on Earth to end. Instead, he refused to give up and fought back aggressively. Now, six years later, though ALS has now confined him to a wheelchair, he still is resolutely fighting the ailment until further medical advances. Now, for his commendable feat, Emmy-winning journalist Maria Shriver hailed the lawyer by penning a heartfelt message for him.

Recently, the father of two, Brian Wallach, took to his Twitter to share the latest update on his ongoing treatment. He shared a video, in which he can be seen walking with the support of nursing staff. Captioning the tweet, the lawyer penned, “Today, I walked. With a lot of help. I thought my days of walking were over, but they are far from over.” On this, Shriver took a moment to voice her regard for Wallach.

In her encomium, the journalist wrote, “you continue to inspire me… wow.” More so, due to an unabating progression in his ALS, Wallach stopped visiting physical therapy sessions. Therefore, medical institutions like Synapticure and Luna Physical Therapy came to the lawyer’s aid by supporting him with in-home physical therapy treatments.

Expressing his warm gratitude for both the physical therapy platforms, Wallach conceded, “As my ALS progressed, I stopped going to PT because the travel was too much. When @synapticure and @getlunacare announced a partnership to bring PT to my home.” Clearly, Brain Wallach is a true testament to the endurance that he showed since his diagnosis in 2017.

Interestingly, to help those who are going through the same agony as him, Wallach co-founded a non-profit organization that supports medical institutions in their research to find the treatment of terminal diseases.

Wallach galvanized a movement to help millions suffering from ALS

In 2019, Wallach and his wife, Sandra Abrevaya, resolved to give back to the community by starting a non-profit organization, I AM ALS. It is the patient-led community that offers support and resources to those impacted by neurodegenerative disorders. The mission of the movement is message-driven, focused on fundraising so scientists can one day soon find a cure for ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s.

Interestingly, Wallach worked behind the scenes in former US President Barack Obama’s 2008 election campaign and helped him with the legal counsel during the presidential elections. So, this goes without saying that he has the full support of the ex-POTUS. With his unparalleled strength, Wallach indeed became an icon, and as Maria Shriver asserted, he is in a true sense an inspiration and an epitome of courage for many.
