The perception of health and fitness has evolved tremendously over the last few years. However, if we think about the same half a century ago, it would be futile to consider that people had the same affinity. Giving us a glimpse of a past reality, in a recent interview with Morning Brew, bodybuilding legend, Arnold Schwarzenegger opened up about the truths concerning health food industries in the 70s versus now.

As the bodybuilding icon who has evolved as the industry evolved as a whole, the Austrian Oak is the best person to talk about all things bodybuilding. Let’s have a look at what Schwarzenegger had to say about the health food stores in the 70s.

Arnold Schwarzenegger had become a huge name since the beginning of the 70s with his seven Mr. Olympia titles. Simultaneously, fame knocked on the door when Pumping Iron made it to the movie theaters, transforming him into an icon who took the competitive sport of bodybuilding from the bounds of a gym to the eyes of the world. In the journey to becoming as big as he did, both physically and popularly, the Terminator actor became a dream in the fitness industry. However, what irked Schwarzenegger is people’s ignorant attitude toward living a healthy life. To destroy myths that taking care of one’s own health and body is not limited to bodybuilders, he went out of his way to use his popularity to influence people to go to gyms and exercise daily.

While speaking with Morning Brew, Schwarzenegger revealed the reason for the gap. He said, “In those days, there were some bodybuilding magazines and some health magazines and everyone in the health food business looked like shit. You know, they’re all kind of like white and pale. When I used to walk into the health food store in the old days, in the ’70s, I never wanted to look anything like the people working behind the counter. They all looked awful and not healthy at all.”

Schwarzenegger added, “So, you ask yourself, ‘How am I gonna get inspired eating this stuff and taking all these vitamins when I might end up looking like this guy behind the counter?‘” With easy accessibility to podcasts, newsletters, health videos, etc. because of the internet, things have been made easier. Schwarzenegger has been a constant advocate of a healthy lifestyle and undertook many attempts to reinstate this. In one such attempt, he now publishes updates on his newsletter, The Daily Pump, concerning health, fitness, and a better way of living. Let’s have a look at some of it.

In the latest edition, Schwarzenegger wrote about the ‘one-hour fix’. The legend asked his followers to increase an hour of their sleep. He said, “Adding 1-hour of sleep to your day can help support healthier eating habits, reduce hunger, and limit the likelihood that you crave foods that are higher in fat and sugar.”
