Bodybuilding icon Frank Zane is indeed a maestro in his field. After starting training at YMCA, he eventually became Mr. Olympia 3 times consecutively. The champion once in 2010, recalling the journey of his competitions, shared his regime to be in shape all the time. He recounted the facts of his changes in diet according to the season. Zane even disclosed his approach to diet and exercises before the Mr. Olympia events.

Living in Pennsylvania, Zane joined a local gym. From his teenage, he admired bodybuilders. As a believer in split training, Zane liked to divide his leg days, and shoulder days to incorporate a proportionate focus. Within a very short period, he started to see results. Pleased from the outcomes, he said, “I really liked it because it was something I could do on my own. I did not have to depend on anybody, it was all about what I did.”

His dedicated diet had its own contributions to his success. Fans often get curious about the protein and carb ratio in his food. In an interview with Muscle & Strength, he said, “I always ate a restricted carbohydrate diet. I would keep my carbohydrate intake lower than my protein intake. If I needed a boost, like if I was not getting pumped from my workout, I would eat more carbohydrates.”

In addition to this, he liked to maintain a four-days running cycle and eat his carbs accordingly to boost his energy. He generally opted for 2000-3000 calories a day and set the parameter as per upcoming competitions.

Frank Zane supports flexible diet

The king of aesthetics did not follow a very radical way of diet. He believes that to participate or win in a competition, one needs to look his best. The numbers, for him, are only measurements and that will not help in winning. Obviously, bodybuilding is a field that requires years of dedication and the peak cannot be achieved by making some instant changes. Zane advised changing plans if someone is not really satisfied with the looks.

Revealing the secret behind his maintained shape, the 80-year-old veteran suggested bodybuilders to be flexible with their diet. Even though he followed a strict diet where his carbohydrate intake was less than protein, he always cared for his body’s needs.
