Not all dreams come true, but what really matters is how bravely you tried. History will remember Yuzuru Hanyu as the man who fought until the very last moment. The results may not have been in his favor, but he gave his everything in accomplishing his lifelong dream of landing a perfect quad axel jump.

The Japanese figure skater couldn’t win his third consecutive Olympic gold and had to settle for fourth place in the men’s short program, while his compatriots, Shoma Uno and Yuma Kagiyama, shared the podium with the champion, Nathan Chen. Hanyu had an overall score of 283.21 points and he was way behind the gold medalist, Chen, who scored 332.60 points.

Hanyu’s failed attempt at quad axel

The two-time Olympic gold medalist fell twice during his performance in the men’s short program today. As per the program, the Japanese skater had to perform four quad jumps- a quadruple Axel, a quadruple Salchow, and two quadruple toe loops. While attempting the most difficult figure skating jump, quad axel, Hanyu fell on his landing but continued skating.

He fell once again while making quadruple salchow and could only add 188.06 points to his previous score. The quad axel jump requires four-and-a-half revolutions in the air before landing. Hanyu is the only figure skater ever who nearly got it to perfection in the Japanese national championship 2021.

Yuzuru Hanyu couldn’t make it three in a row

Yuzuru Hanyu is indeed a figure skating legend. Along with two Olympic gold medals, he has several records under his name. However, it was Nathan Chen’s time to become an Olympic champion here at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. They both are the top figure skaters in the world and are often seen as rivals, but Nathan has a strong professional respect for Hanyu.

Although Hanyu couldn’t complete his dream of performing a perfect 4A or winning a third consecutive gold medal, with his attempt to do the impossible, he has won the respect and love of the entire world. He touched the ice while leaving the rink and he was smiling and waving at fans.
