As the NHL prevented their players from appearing at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, things were looking bleak for the American outfit. With many inexperienced players on the national team, Team USA could not reach the semi-finals, despite giving it their all. Significantly, the Ice Hockey team from Slovakia defeated them in a dramatic fashion. Team USA lost 3-2 in the penalty shootout to Slovakia, in the quarterfinals of the event.
Slovakia moved a step closer to claiming their first-ever Olympic gold medal, as they put in a valiant effort. As for Team USA, it was a disappointing performance in the end.

Despite all the controversies leading to the competition, the NHL players were not permitted to take part in the Winter Games. Instead, players from European Leagues and college players represented their country. Although it is a learning curve for most of these young athletes, it proved to be a disappointing outing for the team.
Nonetheless, their performances in the group stages were a thing of beauty. Being undefeated, confidence was through the roof. Hence, this end to their campaign came as a shock.

Peter Cehlarik was the only goalscorer in the penalty shootout as the game went to penalties after a 2-2 draw. With a chance of scoring in the shootout, USA’s captain, Andy Miele, stepped up to keep the Americans in contention. Netminder of Slovakia, Patrik Rybar, proved to be tough opposition and knocked out the Americans.
Team USA building for the future?
It would be disappointing for many young men to go out of the competition like this. But, there are some bright takeaways from the competition.

Matty Beniers from the University of Michigan came out as a top prospect to look forward to. He has impressed many scouts and can secure a valuable contract in the future. Likewise, the defenseman, Jake Sanderson, is another interesting player who has risen through the ranks.
