After the disappointing runs, Shiffrin herself has been trying to figure out what’s going wrong. She talked about the unforgiving nature of the sport, how skiing’s intensity means there’s absolutely no margin for error.
Mikaela Shiffrin is disappointed with the outcome
It is rare to see an illustrious skier go out quickly for her signature events. She sat down after the slalom competition while her coach came out to help her through her shock. Talking to the media is a hard thing to do, as she could not believe what happened. She opened up about what she felt during the competition.
“Actually, the safest way to ski is that aggressive because your whole mind and body, you are alert enough, you are ready to take on what challenges are there. But there?s no space. You can?t come back [at] the next point.”
“Today, I wish there was a little bit more space, more time,” said Shiffrin.
In spite of the disappointment in the slalom, she remains determined to compete in the next event; the Super-G competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Competing for the next event
With one more competition left, Shiffrin has her eyes firmly set on the event. The last time she won the Super-G competition was in 2019 at the World Championships, winning the gold medal.
Given the longer winding between the gates, athletes pick up speed for the super giant slalom event. The Jurassic Park commercial of her escaping the dinosaurs may be a key takeaway for the upcoming event as the speed is key for Super-G.
