Sha’Carri Richardson speaks out on double standards at the Olympics

Popular American track and field sprinter Sha’Carrie Richardson had been unable to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This was because she failed a cannabis drug screening at the trials, which resulted in her ban from the event.

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva is going to compete at the Beijing Winter Olympics. However, Valieva too has failed her drug test, but will still go ahead and participate in the mega-event.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that 15-year-old Valieva can compete at the Winter Olympics. Otherwise, she would undergo “irreparable harm in the circumstances,” Director-General Matthieu Reeb stated.

As a result, Sha’Carri Richardson took to Instagram to call out the decision. She stated that “losing (her) mother wasn’t enough for (her) to run”. Sha’Carri is referring to her 2021 ban when she admitted to using cannabis to cope with the death of her biological mother.

In 2021, Richardson had excelled at the track trials but failed her selection into the US team because the trial detected cannabis in her system.

Consequently, she tried to cope with the “emotional panic” and the “nerve-shocking” effects of the news by turning to the drug. Nevertheless, Richardson had taken accountability for her actions and agreed with the decision.

“I wonder why they let her (compete),” Richardson wrote on her Instagram story, next to a screenshot of the news regarding Kamila Valieva.

International Olympic Committee will forego ceremony if Valieva wins a medal

Even though the CAS allowed 15-year-old Kamila Valieva to go ahead and compete at the Winter Olympics, her medal hopes are not as high anymore as they were.

Valieva was and remains the title favorite in her events. However, the International Olympic Committee has stated that there would be no medal ceremony if Valieva were to finish with a place on the podium.

Hence, this also means that the Committee could revoke Valieva’s medal if she were to win. Nevertheless, it does not take away anything from Sha’Carri Richardson’s uproar over the decision.

What is your opinion about this matter? Should Kamila compete at the Winter Olympics?
