It’s been a tough couple of days for the 15-year-old Russian figure skater, Kamila Valieva, at the Beijing Winter Olympics. But like always, she was at the top of her game when needed. The world record holder got into controversy earlier this week after she returned a positive doping test. However, following legal proceedings, the Russian skater was allowed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to perform today.

And with a remarkable showdown, she has already won gold for Russia in a team event in Beijing and was also the top favorite in the women’s figure skating short program today. In her defense of the doping scandal, the 15-year-old argued that her drug test was positive because of a mix-up with her grandfather’s heart medication.

Kamila Valieva is leading in the women’s short program

With a score of 82.16, the 15-year-old is currently leading the short program event, followed by her compatriot, Anna Shcherbakova, in the second position, with 80.20 points. Before the event, she said, “It’s as if I don’t have any emotions left. I am happy but at the same time I am emotionally tired.” However, after securing the lead, she couldn’t hold back her tears.

Her performance today has proved that her maturity and love for figure skating are beyond limits. Notably, if Kamila Valieva wins a place at the podium, the medal ceremony will not be held at the Winter Games as her doping controversy is yet to be investigated.
