In the latest developments, following the rise in global tensions, the International Skating Union has acted upon calls to ban Russian figure skaters. Thus, this changes the whole complexion of the World Championships competition, which was to be held in France.

Figure skating team barred from competing

According to the Wall Street Journal, The International Skating Union acted after the International Olympic Committee asked sports federations to ban Russian athletes due to the various untoward incidents happening in Europe. Hence, the ISU barred Russian figure skaters from competing in various competitions in the future.

Most of these figure skaters are some of the greatest talents in the sport and are even defending champions in several competitions. Significantly, they produce the best figure skaters in the sport’s history. Hence, a ban from the competition would be a bitter blow for the athletes.

Apart from the recent ban, Kamila Valieva’s positive drug test has left a sour taste for everyone involved in the sport. NBC commentator, Johnny Weir, delivered a passionate rant during the competition as he talked about the problems with that decision. Undoubtedly, the Valieva situation is another cause of concern.

The controversy in Beijing

Amidst the rising tensions, the positive test of Valieva is another major incident for figure skating. At a time when there is no respite for taking performance enhancers, Valieva could participate, even though she tested positive months before the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. The skater had trimetazidine, a banned heart medication, in her system, which caused a major stir at the Olympic Games.
